As knitters who have been purchasing (and hoarding) yarn for years, we can often find ourselves in a situation where what was considered a sweater quantity of yarn in the past is no longer sufficient. Over the years, I have come up with various ways to address this issue. And when it comes to basic sweater styles, my favourite solution is to add strategically placed stripes in order to supplement sweater quantities (SSQ).
On the surface, the idea of adding a few stripes if you don’t have enough yarn is so obvious it hardly requires explanation - let alone a Guide! But the goal of this method, is not merely to add yarn to an insufficient sweater quantity. It is to do so in a way that retains the integrity and dominance of the original sweater quantity colour.
The SSQ Stripes method works best with basic, stockinette sweater patterns, with ribbed edgings.
Patterns with raglan and saddle shoulder yoke construction are especially well suited.
Choosing from my own patterns, I recommend the following:
the Saglan Pullover
the Versal Pullover
the Clara Pullover
the Timepiece Pullover
